From Germany to Glacier View: The Extraordinary Life and Estate of Helga Larson A journey across continents, a lifetime of service to Alaska, a love for llamas, and a remarkable collection of European treasures. Every estate tells a story, but some stories span continents, generations, and a lifetime of adventure. For Helga Larson, that story began in a small German village, carried her across the ocean to Alaska, and eventually led to a mountain home in Glacier View, where her love for European history, antiques, and llamas became part of the life she built. Wild Alaska Auction Co. is honored to share a glimpse into Helga’s extraordinary life as we prepare to offer her treasured estate collection to the public. From Germany to Alaska Born in Kassel and raised in Westuffeln, Germany, Helga grew up during a period shaped by World War II and significant changes throughout Europe. Her German heritage remained an important part of her identity, reflected in the remarkable collection of European antiques, pottery, fine china, and household treasures she accumulated throughout her lifetime. In 1966, Helga began a new chapter in Alaska. She married Alan Leroy Larson in 1970, a Wyoming native who had moved to Alaska in 1964. Together, they raised their family in Eagle River before relocating to Palmer in 1984. Their lives became deeply intertwined with the growth and development of the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. A Family That Helped Shape the Mat-Su Valley Alan Larson was well known for his contributions to surveying, drafting, platting, and land development. As the original draftsman of the Mat-Su Borough’s tax maps in the 1970s, Alan quite literally helped put the Valley on the map. Helga shared his dedication to the community. Licensed as a Realtor in 1974, she built a real estate career spanning more than five decades, helping Alaskans navigate property ownership and development. Her public service included serving as Chairperson of the Mat-Su Borough Planning Commission, Chair and Board Member of the Borough Platting Board, Port MacKenzie Port Commissioner, and involvement with the Palmer Economic Development Authority. An active Rotarian, Helga served as club president and was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. Together, Helga and Alan left a lasting mark on the Mat-Su Valley through their professional accomplishments and community involvement. Alan passed away unexpectedly on September 10, 2007, while sheep hunting near Seward, doing something he loved in Alaska’s great outdoors. A Mountain Home and a Love for Llamas Beyond her professional accomplishments, Helga had another passion: llamas. Her mountain property near Mile 90 of the Glenn Highway in Glacier View reflected her love for animals, the outdoors, and rural Alaska living. Surrounded by breathtaking scenery, her home became a place filled with llamas, European antiques, and treasured belongings collected over decades. Her affection for llamas is still reflected in her estate, including a collection of figurines, several featuring real llama wool from Alaska. These personal keepsakes offer a charming glimpse into Helga’s life beyond her professional and civic accomplishments. A Collection That Crossed Oceans and Generations Perhaps one of the most fascinating parts of Helga’s story is the extraordinary collection she assembled. Her German heritage and appreciation for European craftsmanship are evident throughout her estate. Authentic German salt-glazed stoneware, handcrafted Polish Bolesławiec pottery, Dutch Delft ceramics, European antiques, fine china, antique furniture, vintage household pieces, and unusual collectibles are just some of the treasures. Some pieces still carry handwritten notes and tags from her antique shopping trips, offering clues about their origins and the journeys they took before arriving in Alaska. From hand-painted pottery to antique ironwork and historic European designs, her collection represents generations of craftsmanship, history, and culture. These were more than antiques. They were pieces Helga personally selected and brought into her home, surrounding herself with reminders of her European roots. From Germany to Alaska, and eventually into the mountains of Glacier View, these treasures traveled an extraordinary distance. Now, they are ready to find new homes. From Germany to Glacier View — An Extraordinary Estate Auction Wild Alaska Auction Co. is proud to present “From Germany to Glacier View – The Extraordinary Estate of Helga Larson.” Our team traveled into the mountains to carefully bring you this extensive collection, giving bidders throughout Alaska and beyond the opportunity to discover Helga’s remarkable treasures.
